COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to cover virtually every aspect of general surgery with a special focus on clinical surgery. The distinguished national faculty of surgical authorities will translate current surgical literature into clinically applicable material that you will be able to apply immediately to your own practice or incorporate into your individual studies. It is intended to assist the general surgeon in reviewing the areas of general surgery that may no longer be current in that surgeon's practice. This course will incorporate basic science principles applicable to clinical practice.

In addition, this course offers 25.75 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association and meets the requirements of Part II of the American Board of Surgery Maintenance of Certification.

OBJECTIVES

The Purpose of this course will be to:

  1. Apply basic science principles of clinical surgery.  There will be a particular interest in the pre- and postoperative care of critically ill patients and surgical patients undergoing major operative procedures.  Current scientific studies will be discussed as well as the ways for future research.

  2. Describe the pathophysiology of both common and unusual problems encountered in the clinical setting. This will include new methods of treatment, which will include both medical and surgical management.

  3. Identify areas of strength and weaknesses requiring further personal study.  This will be accomplished by giving the participants a set of questions to answer before the course. A second set of questions will be handed out at the end of the course to assist in their home studies. Each lecture will be accompanied by a set of references, which will enable the participant to gather further information on that topic.

  4. Improve personal comprehension of current standards of practice in general surgery.  This will be accomplished by the lectures from the distinguished faculty. In addition, a question and answer period is allowed at the end of each lecture. There is also an opportunity each day to meet with the individual faculty to ask specific questions which relate to the participants own practice.
    Final version adopted 3/17/04.
