PROGRAM FEATURES
CONTROVERSIES IN SURGERY - “Laparoscopic
Colectomy versus Open Colectomy – Pro and Con”
From 5:15 - 7:00 PM on Sunday there will be a presentation in a pro/con
fashion debating the merits of open vs laparoscopic colon resection. With
the recent publications regarding the outcomes of laparoscopic colorectal
surgery, there is great debate as to what the “Gold Standard” will be.
This session will discuss the controversies in this field. Dr. Heidi
Nelson, author of the recent study on laparoscopic colon resections will
be present as a discussant.

J. Scott, M.D.,
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Director, Tulane Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery
Tulane University School of Medicine
New Orleans, LA
Course
Description:
This course is designed for practicing surgeons and other clinicians
who are interested in the laparoscopic approach to ventral and incisional
hernias. The program will focus on basic techniques critical to
success and extensive video tutorials will be used in the didactic
component. Lectures will emphasize patient selection, the use of
biomaterials, surgical technique, and outcomes.
There will be an intensive hands-on session on
Saturday using a porcine model to allow ample practice of the laparoscopic
technique.
Objectives:
Following the didactic component, participants should be able to:
1. Discuss various biomaterials and their
adhesion properties used in ventral hernia repair.
2. Discuss appropriate patient selection.
3. Discuss surgical techniques.
4. Discuss various
mesh fixation techniques and controversies.
5. Discuss outcomes
compared to open ventral hernia repairs.
6. Discuss
